The biggest changing is its UI and security features. A new security feature that has been introduced by Microsoft in Windows 8 is called SmartScreen filter. This feature is a counter measure by Microsoft to deal with malicious files and software.

If you observe the operation of SmartScreen filter in “Windows Folder Options” then you will find the following options. The first option that you will see is, “Never run downloaded programs that are unknown to SmartScreen”. If you select this option then any file that seems strange to SmartScreen filter will not be executable in your system. The second option is, “Use SamrtScreen to check files”. In this case, SmartScreen will check the files in your computer and compare them with its white or black list before letting you have access to those files.

However, before that it was only used in apps but now it has been officially added to Windows 8. Now SmartScreen Filter will act in coordination with other Security features of Windows Operating System in order to provide better security in both online and offline states to the user.
